What are you using to record your mixes?
|
|
For years, I used a shitty 750mhz p3 running Windows XP with 256 megs of Ram, an Maudio AudioPhille 24/96k Recording card and Sound Forge.
These days I'm using an AMD 4600+, w/4 gigs of ram, XP same card as above and Sound Forge.
Once the mix is recorded, I normall roll off anything thats 20hz and down, cause is just noise and muddys up the mix. Boost some mids and some of the highs and I'm done. I'll post a picture of my EQ settings when I get home.
I know some people will master an entire mix from start to finish.. Im kinda lazy.
What about you?

When I started waaaay back. I used a Pentium Pro 200mhz and 64megs of ram to do 16bit recordings same card to record and those sounded pretty good.
Honestly, it doesn't take a monster machine to record or play.
editing on the other hand can happen, but its just sloooooow.

so i use a
laptop
Fujitsu A1110-72 (Intel Core 2 Duo T5800 Processor 3GB RAM 250GB Hard Drive Windows Vista Premium
and rca to the mic in.
wah wah...
with soundforge
ive been recording and recording but it always has extra crakles and pops that make it sound nasty...
ive been trying to put out a mix for a good while now, but hearing my shitty sound quality makes me not wanna post them just yet...
when i went to the goverment controlled event last month, i noticed a m-audio interface, which i know improves quality...
do yall know which one it was that yall use?
and how can i improve my sound now without the interface?

duhrdy; what version of audacity are you using and when you say normalize is that in the edit menu? cause i sometimes have the same problem as mluna, playback sounds like garbage. i did record one this weekend that sounded ok. and i know to get them flawless would be a large investment on my part. so im all about audacity for now. if theres any tips you can give me on this it would be much appreciated mang.

just check your line-in levels and make sure they're not too low or too high and clipping the recording.
normalize will take the median of the peaks and valleys of your recording and make them the same consistent volume. its under effects or sumthin. i'm not at home atm so i dont have the program to open and tell ya.

Viral, yea, justin said it. Even if you mixer is at 0db when recording, if your line-in levels are off it'll either over drive the signal giving you bad sound, not enough signal means you can't hear anything.
this sort of thing also applies to the radio station as well.

Re:

yeah viral, normalize will basicly fix alot of sounds after u record but it wont "equalize" each song to song to sound the same ( volume, lows, highs wise). thats when u go through ur recorded session and really try to equalize the whole mixx to be at the same volume..song by song. and try not to clip or it will sound like cripe..trust me i used to do all the time till i found out the difference between clipped and not clipped.
btw... im using audacity as well atm, i was using audition which really rocks but my last virus killed that for me

Use anything that you are comfortable with working with. I like to use Soundforge or Cubase either way it will do the same job at the end of the day...I would not always go the Normalzing route try eqing it proper before you just go out and start boosting levels...

We use Cubase, on our 'music production computer', which has an Intel E8500 processor, 4 gigs RAM, windows XP, and NOT CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET! (its also our machine for producing tracks!)
Inevitable editing of shotty mixes (to my ears), sometimes even the slightest hint of reverb gives it that "live" sound. (Gotta be careful tho, it will make some tracks bass go boom). Even slighter EQing (depending on what sources we're using, vinyl, WAV, Mp3, etc.) and I call it a day.
