I have it.
It doesn't work so well with Reason 3.0 out of the box.. I had to do a lot of programming and mapping of keys. However Reason 4.0.1 supports it with zero issues.
Its a little large, and If I could do it over I would have gotten the smaller version of it. Its cheaper and would do everything I would need it to do.

Unless you are dead set on making your own tunes, I would get new monitors.
The only reason I haven't made the digital jump is because none of the laptop based dj programs support 3 decks.

i owned one, its bad ass, works perfect with what i got. There is some tweeks to get it to work 100% but its software dependent in that area. The pressure pads are more like low med high, instead of low lowmid mid midhigh lowhigh high . Rotter knobs are infinite so that has its perks. Once you get the programing down, we can play pretty much 5 or so vst's at once on it.

The axiom is WAY more than you need to pay for a decent velocity-sensitive MIDI keyboard. You can get the M-Audio Oxygen 49 for $139 and it will do everything that you need:

Realistically though, if you're not even sure if you're going to be serious about writing tracks, you can get by with something even smaller like the Oxygen 8:

Kurt,i have been meaning to talking with u about this .. i know u love ur vinyl but damn, i have have saved (off the top of my head) about $2000, not buying vinyl, since i made the digital switch!! I have not bought vinyl in about a year and a half!! roughly, i play like 17-18 toons per weekly show.. so on average i get about 20 new toons a week, ( unless im playing a gig).. Serato is a great way to go but i went with torq for 2 bills cheaper!! ( i know u know this already)... basically Kurt, u can still play on that one extra deck vinyl, and on the other 2 decks, use torq or serato... which means, Math wise, cutting ur vinyl purchasing 2/3... thats saving big bills right there... my torq paid for itself like 2 weeks after i bought it!!
-SAME GOES FOR U TOO MLUNA!!! ^^^

because of all the bad ass tracks that have been uploaded to EDJ(and this is no bullshit), I'm now adding a CDJ to the mix. So 3 decks and a cdj like whoa. I'll make the jump someday.. im just not ready.

nah.. i'd try and get all 4 going, but it would sound like a mess.. Ive said it before and I'll say it again, the 3rd deck is usually a staging device to queue up my next mix. I really use 3 decks when I'm speed mixing.. you know 5 songs in 7 minutes or something.

I have the axiom 61. I think personally it is fucking awesome. There is a patch that you can get for reason 3.0 and it is pretty much mapped out for you in reason three. With the new things added in reason 4.0 you do have to manually map some shit out but it is not at all time consuming or anything. Almost all the buttons in reason 3.0 and up have a learn function that makes it really ez to get things started with the knobs and such.
If you do decide to get it you will have to install a special driver for the reason and the axiom.
here is the link: http://www.m-audio.com/index.php?do=support.drivers&f=753
1. install reason if not already installed
2. install the drivers for the axiom 49 and the reason remote v7
3. go the the midi section of reason and there should now have the axiom 25-61 as a choice for main midi controller.
4. it will ask you if you want to overwrite patch 10 click yes and it should work because that shit works for me. of course with certain features you still have to map it. The start and stop functions should work and the eight pads will be able to controll redrum 1-8

also...the axiom 25-61 come with ableton live, the m-audio version but nonetheless it is free when you buy it.
-Another way that you can map out the axiom 49-61 is into zones. You can create up to four zones on your keys all assigned to different midi channels which can come in handy if you want to work on bass, mids and highs all at the same time...but in reason you can still only record one track at a time...Meaning you can have four different instruments mapped out on four different channels but you can also do that with the combinator...Regardless it is good investment if you choose to get it. If you do not like semi-weighted keys you can always go the keystation 88 pro made by m-audio that has fully weighted keys and a lot more functions for 100 dollars more. 15 rotary knobs, 15 sliders, and i think 15 assignable buttons and a transport but it is 88 keys. Dont really know how much you would want to go in that route.

i just got the axiom 49...ive played bass for about 8 yrs and writing beats with a zoom rythm track for a couple years..i really want to get into production but have no experience with reason 4...the axiom comes preloaded with the more common synth presets like the maelstrom , subtractor and a couple of others...can anyone help with mapping this controller and any other production tips as well...i suppose im kinda in over my head with reason...not quite as easy as looping a beat and layering my bass samples with acid...

depends on your software you are trying to map it with really, i use Platinum studios Orion, it was pretty much plug and play for me, with the addition of a few tweaks.

We make all of our productions right now in Reason 4.0. Alot of people bash it, but for our purposes and electronic music in general, you can't go wrong with it. Its completely self-contained, doesnt hog resources like other DAW programs with VST plugins will. The only drawback is that you can really only get a good mixdown and basic mastering, even by using the 'mastering suite combinators' that are included in 4.0. So take that mixdown and load it into your DAW program (Cubase, Protools, whatever) and you can use alot better mastering VSTs in that environment. As for the midi keyboard, I really REALLY want an Axiom 25-key, mainly for space issues (right now i have a basic 49-key no bells or whistles), but the drum pads and 'endless' knobs also seem nice.
