I've heard 'reason' and 'logic' thrown around all over the place --- don't know a thing (other than basic basic concepts of how it's done in general) about the difference or preferences. I haven't really researched it all that much. I'm scared to begin to play around with it because it could consume me!

I am a piano player (primarily)- more a music reader- minus a brief 4yrs of jazz band a long time ago- than a composer to this point in my life... it's what brought me to Dallas in '99 for school. I can break down music theory like none other and I know time sigs. etc. since they've been a structured part of my education since I was 4 hahaha. I'm just thinking "Great Kerry, just what you need at this point in your life- an addiction and excuse to be even more antisocial!" ...but I love dnb- oh and I have a full sized roland keyboard with weighted keys and midi attch. I could learn to have fun with a WHOLE new way... I'm just a one of those perfectionists though that would probably lock myself away in room for a year with no sunlight to perfect a musical masterpiece haha. It's so tempting though...

You don't need that thing on ebay.. In less then a year, it'll be out dated.

I use Reason. Its a full on music production studio. Its about 400$ for a legit copy, a decent midi controller is 150. I have 2 books I picked up in Reason. Its not one of those things you can just screw around and figure out. If you think you can, you'll miss so much. After reading 80% of the first book and using the 2nd as a companion I find it so easy to do what I want.

btw.. Ive been playing guitar and bass for the last 12 years so having that music theroy behind me really helped.

There are other DAW's that you could use but if your choice is between reason or logic there are a lot of factors to take in. For starters Logic is no longer made for windows based PC so if you choose that you will have to get a mac which is by no means a bad idea. Another thing that Logic has is realtime recording of wavs. Meaning you can record direct into the Logic where as Reason is nothing but a midi based program. I like reason and have been using it for quite some time and the other alternative for me is Cubase which is very similar to logic but made for windows. Now there is an old cracked version of logic that is soooooooo fucking out dated there is no need to even go that route. I think personally you should just hang out with people that are already using some tools that you would like to learn about then see where you would want to go from there...

OMG!!!!!!!! C'MON PEOPLE, PLAY WITH REASON!!!!!!!!!

I ran into diesolboy and evol intent on south beach walking to my car a few years ago. I started attacking them with production technique questions and stuff about what they use. Gigantor started to sing a very beautiful song for me. It sang something like this, Reason with logic, oh reason with logic. in kinda a weird oprah guy kinda voice/drunkin man being silly tone.
It was great, they were realy cool and they couldnt stress the simple fact that SLAVE MODE on reason is the shite. You dont need logic, you can use abelton,cubase,any DAW that allows slave and or rewire modes.

Reason is alot easier to use and if you have the talent to play the piano you can learn reason.
