I have.. I spent about a week trying to teach someone, and they just didn't get the whole counting to 4 thing, or when to count, or music structure. forget matching levels, eqing, and fading in and out.

i was lucky enough to be classically trained. understanding phrasing is tough if you have no musical background. there's a huge learning curve.

i understand quite a bit about DnB and Djin at this point, just from hanging around you guys hearing 100's of DnB sets and noticing the differences in the way each of you play.. i've had people try to teach me but for me its ehh...

i have plenty of DnB in all styles to listen to and many of you guys to keep me up-to-date with the latest, greatest and the classics mix in between. For me it boiled down to having the time, equipment and dedication, i honestly spent more of my time doing things like web development instead the result is what you see before you today, not such a bad trade off in my opinion.

oh man, nobody would teach me when i wanted to learn. and if they did try they sucked at teaching. Then one day my friend dropped off his gear at my house and was like, here..learn. he left it for about 6 months and when he came to get it i was already knee deep in tunes and ready to go. but something wasnt right, i mean i could make it work but it wasnt till my good friend wickid was like this is how you phrase and what you need to listen for and all that, over the phone. instantly got it. i was like hell yeah!

and yeah my old roomate wanted me to teach him, im not sure if i ever met anyone so challenged. he got frustrated and quit trying. but my new roomate who knew nothing about beatmatching or phrasing just watched me in my room. hes a baddass now.

Viral, im kinda like you.. no one showed me anything.. I just sorta figured it out. I think with anything tho, if you rely on everyone around you to make you better.. you are setting yourself up for failure. I think that was my gripe about the person I was treaching. he wanted everyone to teach him, but he didn't want to put any effort into it.

exactly what was the problem with what i had stated earlier, but yeah i think everyone would sound artificial if there were no developement of style, persay created or brought for by the dj/artist theirself. uniqueness is key.

i try new stuff all the time, wrecking in my apartment is OK..

it just 'clicks' with some people.. they get it, or they dont.. and the ones that dont, just need to quit.

i learned by listening to mixes on the radio... after a point i was able to tell how tunes were mixed.... it wasnt until i went to a club in South Padre Island during Spring Break that I saw a DJ mixing trance on vinyl and that was the turning point. I just saw him cue up records and i could tell where the track had to start. If it wasnt because i saw this dude mixing on vinyl i probably would not have 'gotten' it. Watching and listening is key if u want to learn how to beatmatch and mix tunes. BTW the DJ i saw is actually Kyzer and he mixes DNB now. Were actually friends atm.

I tried having people explain to me how to do it but they just kept telling me how they learned it. Eventually I figured it out. It's one of those things you have to figure out on your own and keep practicing. If you don't practice, you wont succeed.

i had nobody to teach me, but i had some badass technics...
alot of stoned nights by myself spending hour after hour praticing..

I've had decent success... before you explain beatmatching, just explain 4/4 time, teach them to count out a song (phrasing)... then after they get that, put them on the decks.

some people just don't get it, and don't know when to count. understanding song structure is impossible with some people. there are 2 people that come to mind.. 1 person I don't think anyone on this site knows and one who used to be on this site. However, the one that used to be on this site is working on getting better.

same here on the classical training (piano- as my main focus since I was 4) and while I'm not a DJ or producer, the whole understanding of musical phrasing and music theory I think is what makes me really appreciate and love how intricate dnb is for the most part. I think that's why I got hooked on it! Kinda like Bach with the dirteh dirteh basslines that no girl turn down!

I agree u either get it or you dont.. i understood what beatmatching and phrasing was before i started mixing.. hints why i started.. my gf at the time loved trance so i would listen to her shit and one day was like oh shit i get this..eventually someone gave me a copy of system upgrade by dieselboy then bout some cheap decks and went.

seriously jason? system upgrade? it was a soldiers story for me, if it wasnt for that crazy bastereds mix and a girl named ginger, whom i randomly jumped in the car with in like 98 to go to some "party"="rave", i would never have been doin this shit. but that one moment, somewhere along the lines, idk man, just grabbed me.

yea that album is what set it off i believe...I had listened to dnb and had downloaded tracks that i would mix using beat warp on acid pro 2.0.. but that cd convinced me to finally buy decks.
