Words by: Kurt "KDH" Houston
When EDJ radio first went live almost 11 months ago, one producer quickly caught kdh's ears. While listening to the content uploaded, he first heard Nitrous and Skyline's Addicted 2 You (VIP Mix). Completely blown away by what he heard, he quickly checked out Nitrous's profile and realized there was a lot of really great content in there. For months his tunes were a staple streaming on the EDJ Radio station. Fast forward to about 2 weeks ago. Nitrous uploaded a track called Skyline. A complex layer of synths with an upbeat feel that you can't help but rock your head back and forth. A track garenteed to get them ladies dancing on the dance floor and a track you should have in your collection. We sit down with Nitrous for an exclusive EDJ Spot Light Interview.
While you read this, open up another tab in your browser, and check out his profile. It can be found here: http://www.everydayjunglist.org/Nitrous/ Be sure to listen to his 2 latest tracks, Skyline and Escape. I can asure you, you will not be disapointed.
Everyday Junglist: First off, what's your musical background?
Nitrous: I grew up listening to a wide range of different music (Hip-Hop, Metal, Grunge, Punk, Rock). I got exposed to electronic music in the early 90's, slowly starting buying vinyls and first spinning House and Techno music.
EDJ: How did you first get into Drum & Bass?
NS: I first got introduced to drum and bass when I was in College. I was listening to the TV and came upon the video “Inner City Life” from Goldie. This little video completely changed my life!
EDJ: Name a few of the Drum and Bass producers who have inspired you the most.
NS: Roni Size, Goldie, Photek, Ed Rush and Optical, The Upbeats, Dj Hype and John B.
EDJ: What other types of music do you enjoy listening to?
NS: Dubstep, Reggae and Dub.
EDJ: When did you first start producing?
NS: I started producing in 2004.
EDJ: What were you trying to accomplish when you wrote your first few tracks?
NS: Nothing in particular. I just wanted to express my ideas and do something that I liked.

EDJ: Describe your personal studio setup..what hardware and software do you use for music production? Do you use any particular plugging? Mac or PC?
NS: I run everything on a PC. I use Steinberg’s Cubase and Reason. I have an M-Audio Axiom 25 controller and a pair of KRK ST6 monitors..
EDJ: How much time do you tend to spend making a tune? Is there a specific process you go through?
NS: It is always different for each project. A tune can be done overnight if the inspiration is there. If not, it can take more time.
EDJ: Of all your releases, which tune did you enjoy making the most?
NS: I would say Skanka. It was my first Dubwise tune and it was fun to incorporate all the dub elements in it and construct the vibe I wanted to get.
EDJ: Are you producing any other genres at the moment?
NS: A bit of Dubstep with a friend of mine, Meta.B
EDJ: Would you consider yourself a DJ or a producer, first and foremost?
NS: I would first consider myself as a dj. Everything started from there and it is my real passion. I love to see the crowd dancing, especially on tracks that I did.
EDJ: What is the scene like in Canada? What sounds/genres would you say are most popular there?
NS: The scene here in Montreal is really small. Drum and Bass never really went main stream as Montreal is more into that House and Electro sound. But in Toronto it is really different. There is always big names every week and Drum and Bass attract way more peeps.
Can we get a current top 10 from you?
In no particular order:
The Upbeats – Big Skeleton
Camo and Krooked – Vampires
Drumsound and Bassline Smith - Mafia (VIP Mix)
Sub Focus - World of Hurt
Dj Hazard - Wicked So
Trei – Innuendo
Erb N Dub – Bass
Override and Nitrous – Skyline
Rregula and Dementia - Life On Earth
Cern – Eye Dream
EDJ: So what can the general public expect from Nitrous for the rest of '09 and beyond?
NS: I am working a lot on our label “In Da Jungle Recording” ( http://www.indajunglerecording.com ) You can expect lots of quality dnb over the next year on it. We also plan to create a sub-label for it that would specialize in Dubstep. I am also playing every week for our internet radio show called “The 420 Show”. It is going on for over 4 years now and no plan of stopping that. You can catch us every Wednesdays on UB Radio ( http://www.ub-radio.com ) 8 to 11pm (-5GMT)
EDJ: Do you have any shouts to kick?
NS: Shouts to my girl Julia and my best friends Meta.B, Miles D, Moe-Tee aka Special S, Mc Loco and all the Junglist Massive that support the music! Oh, and a special shout to all the Everyday Junglist Staff.
Big Up!
