Dementia (SLR, DSCI4, CITRUS – Hannover, Germany)

EDJ: To get things rolling, What is your favorite thing to eat?
Dementia: Fragmented potatoes, a piece of a young cow and pepper sauce.
EDJ: How would you explain your sound?
Dementia: Stepmother's Nightmare
EDJ: You live in Linz, Austria. How is the scene there?
Dementia: The financal crisis reached the dnb scene in Linz. Djs and mcs are bums now, they checkin the garbage to get something to eat. I was close to become one if them, but I left Linz and moved to Vienna. I made a lot of money by selling sunglasses and moved back to northern Germany. Now I am here and it is boring.
EDJ: What attracted you to the drum and bass/jungle sound?
Dementia: Mhh.. drums..
EDJ: You have a bi-monthly mix series "There is No Escape." What is the purpose of this series?
Dementia: My concept: I want to show that I am a killer dj! Unfortunatly there are so many killer dj's that my first concept is gone now. Besides showing people, that I am the best dj (which I am not, cause there are better dj's) I want to show the people, that there are dope producers out there! Young guns, who keeps the sound fresh. And of course to show, that I have the best dubplates and I am the coolest anyway..
EDJ: If you were not a DJ/Producer, what would you be doing?
Dementia: Comedian or Gangster, one day this, one day that. I used to be a graffiti artist in the early age of 13. That was my gangsta period, now I need to become funny and I can quit dnb.
EDJ: What labels have you released on?
Dementia: Shadow Law, DSCI4 (Legendary!) Citrus (the benchmark label for neurofunk artists, BIG UP!) and many more.. do not forget Shadybrain and Flight!
EDJ: You have worked with a number of amazing producers. What helps with the collaboration process?
Dementia: I think it really helps, that I am not "to cool for school." It is easy to work with me, cause I trust the person I am working with. All these guys I am working with: rregula, axiom, smooth (newcomer of 2009!) are professionals. If they have a vision how a tune should sound, I am feeling their idea. They are giving the same trust back to me. For instance the work with rregula is separated. He mostly started an idea and sends me a "1.30 min. sample pack." My task is to finish the idea, that means: some "Dementia-sounds," arrangment and final-mix. I will start the ideas this year.. or.. mhh.. maybe not.. we will see.
EDJ: What do you have lined up for 09'? Any plans to play in the U.S.?
Dementia: I had two offers playing in the states (end of 2008 and beginning of 2009) and I would love to play there. Unfortunatly something horrible happend in my family.. and it was not the financial crisis. Generally I did not accept any booking offers (from Oct.2008 – March 2009). My next gig will be in Slovenia end of March. I'LL BE BACK! And keep an eye on Chemical, Beatport, etc.. some new tunes are waiting to see the daylight.. keywords: shadybrain 12", trust in music 12", rregula & dementia e.p. 2009.
EDJ: What advice would you give to the aspiring producers out there?
Dementia: Listen to more music than dnb.. stay friendly and try not being pushy on aim.. It is ok to copy a style, cause everyone is doing it in the beginning.. don't copy a style.. listen to your parents or girlfriend, they will tell you, if the subbase was good enough.. perfection is the key to nowhere.. buy my music (BEST ADVICE).. you have to love your first release, cause that is the beginning of your "personal dnb journey" as a producer.. finish every damn idea (minimum 4 min.track), but don't send it to labels, sometimes you can redo an oldtrack and make an "hit".. and last but not least go to www.myspace.com/dementiadnb to be part of the "stepmother's nightmare movement."
